The Chinese Ministry of Commerce warned the United States against expanding restrictions on American investments in China, emphasizing that the new proposals regarding sensitive technologies will negatively impact economic and trade relations between the two countries.
The warning came after the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced last Thursday proposals to update its national security program for foreign investments, which include adding biotechnology to the prohibited sectors and expanding restrictions to cover high-performance computing and supercomputing systems.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce confirmed in a statement yesterday (Saturday) its strong opposition to the U.S. proposals, considering them a discriminatory expansion of investment restrictions related to China, stressing that Beijing reserves the right to take countermeasures without specifying their nature.
It clarified that the proposals will harm bilateral economic relations and contradict the understandings reached by the leaders of the two countries during meetings held in the past six months.
In contrast, the U.S. Department of the Treasury confirmed that the measures are not aimed solely at China but are intended to prevent the use of American capital in developing dual-use strategic technologies in countries that Washington considers a threat to its national security.
The United States had previously imposed restrictions on American investments related to China in the semiconductor, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence sectors.
