لم تكن مجرد ضربة مطرقة لإصلاح دورات المياه، بل حملت مفاجأة الموسم المختبئة تحت أرضية مطعم شهير. في واحدة من أغرب المفاجآت التي شهدتها أماكن الضيافة في العالم، كشفت أعمال ترميم اعتيادية داخل مطعم ونُزل تاريخي بمدينة «داهلونغا» في ولاية جورجيا الأمريكية عن سر مدفون يمتد لأكثر من قرن، بعدما ظل الزوار يأكلون ويشربون لـ40 عاماً كاملة فوق كنز من الذهب دون أن يدري أحد.
القصة الصادمة وقعت في مطعم Smith House الشهير أثناء تنفيذ توسعات لبناء دورات مياه جديدة، وبمجرد أن كسر العمال «بلاطة» خرسانية في الصالة الرئيسية، انفتحت فجأة فتحة دائرية كبيرة تقود إلى عمق مظلم ومرعب في باطن الأرض.
وبعد إزالة الأنقاض والأتربة المتراكمة عبر العقود، أدرك الجميع أنهم يقفون أمام بئر رأسي يبلغ عمقه نحو 9 أمتار وعرضه 1.2 متر، يمثل مدخلاً رئيساً لمنجم ذهب قديم ظل معزولاً ومخفياً لأكثر من 100 عام.
لكن المباغتة الحقيقية التي حبست أنفاس العمال جاءت أثناء تنظيف جدران البئر، حيث تلألأ أمام أعينهم عِرق خالص من الذهب والكوارتز ينبض بالحياة في قلب الجدار الصخري.
ورغم أن سكان المدينة كانوا يتناقلون أسطورة قديمة تقول إن المطعم بُني فوق عِرق ذهب ثري، إلا أن العائلة التي تملك المطعم لم تكن تعطي هذه الشائعات أية أهمية. وقال فريدي ويلش أحد ملاك المكان: «كان الناس يكررون هذه الخرافة دائماً، لكننا لم نكن نصدقها إطلاقاً».
ويعود سر هذا المنجم المخبأ إلى عام 1884، خلال حقبة «حمى الذهب» الشهيرة في أمريكا، حيث اشترى الكابتن فرانك هول تلك الأرض لبناء منزله، واكتشف العمال الذهب أسفل البناء. ورغم محاولاته الحصول على حقوق التعدين، رُفض طلبه خوفاً من إزعاج المتاجر المجاورة، قبل أن يقتله مرض «التيفوئيد» فجأة، ليتوارى السر في طيات النسيان تحت الأرضية.
وتنقلت ملكية المنزل لاحقاً، فاشترته عائلة «سميث» عام 1922 وتحول إلى دار ضيافة تقدم وجبات بسيطة بـ1.5 دولار للغرفة، ثم آل للمالك الحالي عائلة «ويلش» عام 1970، والتي واصلت إدارته دون علم بما يختبئ أسفل أقدام زبائنها.
وبدلاً من إعادة إغلاق البئر ودفن الكنز مجدداً، اتخذت العائلة قراراً استثنائياً بتحويل الفتحة الاستكشافية إلى معرض تاريخي مائي مغطى بالزجاج داخل صالة الطعام، ليتيح للزوار رؤية عِرق الذهب الحقيقي وتأمل القطع الأثرية التي أُخرجت من المنجم.
المطعم الذي كان يستوعب 22 عميلاً فقط في بداياته، بات اليوم يتسع لـ350 شخصاً، بإمكانهم التجمع جميعاً حول فتحة الأرضية التي تحولت من مجرد ضربة «مطرقة» عادية إلى ثورة استعادت بها المدينة قطعة حيّة من تاريخ الذهب الأمريكي.
It was not just a hammer strike to fix the restrooms, but it carried the season's surprise hidden beneath the floor of a famous restaurant. In one of the strangest surprises witnessed in hospitality venues around the world, routine renovation work inside a historic restaurant and inn in the city of "Dahlonega" in the state of Georgia, USA, revealed a buried secret that extends over a century, after visitors had been eating and drinking for a full 40 years above a treasure of gold without anyone knowing.
The shocking story took place at the famous Smith House restaurant during expansions to build new restrooms, and as soon as the workers broke a concrete slab in the main hall, a large circular opening suddenly appeared leading to a dark and terrifying depth in the earth.
After removing the debris and accumulated dirt over the decades, everyone realized they were standing in front of a vertical shaft about 9 meters deep and 1.2 meters wide, representing a main entrance to an old gold mine that had remained isolated and hidden for more than 100 years.
But the real surprise that took the workers' breath away came while cleaning the walls of the shaft, where a pure vein of gold and quartz sparkled before their eyes, pulsating with life in the heart of the rock wall.
Although the townspeople had been passing down an old legend that said the restaurant was built over a rich gold vein, the family that owns the restaurant had never given these rumors any importance. Freddy Welch, one of the owners of the place, said: "People always repeated this myth, but we never believed it at all."
The secret of this hidden mine dates back to 1884, during the famous "Gold Rush" era in America, when Captain Frank Hall bought that land to build his home and workers discovered gold beneath the construction. Despite his attempts to obtain mining rights, his request was denied for fear of disturbing the neighboring shops, before he was suddenly killed by typhoid fever, leaving the secret buried in the depths of oblivion beneath the floor.
The ownership of the house later changed hands, as the "Smith" family bought it in 1922 and it turned into an inn offering simple meals for $1.50 per room, before it passed to the current owner, the "Welch" family, in 1970, who continued to manage it without knowing what was hidden beneath their customers' feet.
Instead of re-closing the shaft and burying the treasure again, the family made an exceptional decision to transform the exploratory opening into a historical water exhibit covered with glass inside the dining hall, allowing visitors to see the real gold vein and admire the artifacts that were extracted from the mine.
The restaurant, which could only accommodate 22 diners in its early days, now has a capacity of 350 people, who can all gather around the floor opening that transformed from just a regular "hammer" strike into a revolution that restored to the city a living piece of American gold history.
