تحت أضواء الشمس الدافئة وفي قلب منطقة «كوستا ديل سول» الساحرة جنوب إسبانيا، كانت المئات من العائلات السياحية تحزم أمتعتها لطرق أبواب الاستجمام والهرب من روتين الحياة اليومية. لكن بين لحظة وأخرى، تحوّلت زرقة المياه الهادئة في مسبح أحد الفنادق الشهيرة إلى مسرح لذعر جماعي وكابوس تنفسي، بعدما تسللت سُحب غازية سامة خنقت أكثر من 60 سائحاً وحوّلت إجازتهم إلى كابوس مرعب!
لم تبدأ الفاجعة بإنذار مُسبق، بل بصرخات مكتومة وأعراض متسارعة باغتت المستحمين فور نزولهم للمياه:
- شلل في التنفس: خلال دقائق معدودة من السباحة، بدأ الأطفال وكبار السن يشعرون بغثيان حاد، ودوار مفاجئ، وحشرجة شديدة في الصدر نتيجة استنشاق غازات كيميائية مركزة.
- استنفرار طبي: هرعت طواقم الإسعاف الإسبانية لنقل الحالات الحرجة إلى مستشفى «كوستا ديل سول»، فيما تحولت أروقة الفندق إلى نقطة فرز طبية لعلاج المصابين بتهيج المجاري التنفسية.
- ضحايا من عدة دول: طالت الإصابات سياحاً من جنسيات متعددة جاءوا لطلب الراحة (بريطانيا، وفرنسا، وألمانيا، والبرتغال، وأوكرانيا)، ليجدوا أنفسهم وجها لوجه مع التسمم الكيميائي.
كيف تحول «الكلور» إلى قنبلة موقوتة؟
أشارت التحقيقات الأولية إلى أن الكارثة نجمت عن خطأ أوتوماتيكي قاتل في منظومة معالجة المياه، وسببها تعطل مضخة الضغط، إذ تعرضت المضخة الآلية المسؤولة عن ضخ وتعديل مستويات الكلور ونسبة الحموضة لعطل مفاجئ وغير متوقع، ما تسبب في توقف الأمان وتراكم الغاز، خصوصاً أن خلل المضخة أدى إلى توقف أنظمة التحكم التلقائية عن العمل، مع استمرار تسرب كميات ضخمة ومكثفة من غاز الكلور المركّز ومواد كيميائية أخرى إلى مياه المسبح والهواء المحيط به مباشرة.
وبينما كانت الفرق المختصة ترفع العينات من المسبح، حاولت إدارة الفندق امتصاص الغضب بحيلة لم تدم طويلاً:
- إغلاق وتحايل: سارعت الإدارة لإغلاق المسبح وعلقت لافتات تدّعي أن السبب هو «أعمال صيانة دورية»، مستبعدة الإفصاح عن الحقيقة، وممتنعة تماماً عن تقديم أي تصريح رسمي للإعلام.
- عينات وشكاوى قضائية: شوهدت طواقم المختبرات الجنائية وهي ترفع عينات المياه للتحليل، في حين بدأ عشرات السياح المتضررين بالتنسيق مع محامين لتقديم شكاوى قضائية حازمة ضد الفندق لتعويضهم عن اللحظات المرعبة التي عاشتها عائلاتهم.
وتأتي هذه الكارثة الإسبانية بعد أيام قليلة من حادثة مطابقة تماماً في إيطاليا خنقت 9 أشخاص بينهم أطفال؛ لتسلط الضوء على خطر نسيان الصيانة الدورية لأنظمة ضخ المواد الكيميائية التي تحول المسابح في لحظات إلى مصائد غاز سامة.
Under the warm sunlight and in the heart of the enchanting "Costa del Sol" region in southern Spain, hundreds of tourist families were packing their bags to embark on a journey of relaxation and escape from the routine of daily life. But in a moment, the tranquil blue waters of a famous hotel pool turned into a scene of mass panic and a respiratory nightmare, as clouds of toxic gas seeped in, choking more than 60 tourists and turning their vacation into a terrifying nightmare!
The tragedy did not begin with a warning, but with muffled screams and rapid symptoms that surprised bathers as soon as they entered the water:
- Respiratory paralysis: Within just a few minutes of swimming, children and the elderly began to feel severe nausea, sudden dizziness, and intense chest tightness due to inhaling concentrated chemical gases.
- Medical alert: Spanish ambulance crews rushed to transport critical cases to the "Costa del Sol" hospital, while the hotel corridors turned into a medical triage point to treat those suffering from respiratory irritation.
- Victims from multiple countries: The injuries affected tourists from various nationalities who came seeking relaxation (from Britain, France, Germany, Portugal, and Ukraine), only to find themselves face to face with chemical poisoning.
How did "chlorine" turn into a ticking time bomb?
Initial investigations indicated that the disaster resulted from a fatal automatic error in the water treatment system, caused by a malfunction of the pressure pump. The automatic pump responsible for pumping and adjusting chlorine levels and acidity experienced an unexpected and sudden failure, leading to a halt in safety measures and the accumulation of gas, especially since the pump malfunction caused the automatic control systems to stop working, while massive and concentrated amounts of chlorine gas and other chemicals continued to leak into the pool water and the surrounding air.
As specialized teams were collecting samples from the pool, the hotel management attempted to absorb the anger with a tactic that did not last long:
- Closure and deception: The management hurried to close the pool and hung signs claiming the reason was "routine maintenance," avoiding disclosing the truth and completely refraining from providing any official statement to the media.
- Samples and legal complaints: Forensic teams were seen collecting water samples for analysis, while dozens of affected tourists began coordinating with lawyers to file firm legal complaints against the hotel to compensate them for the terrifying moments their families experienced.
This Spanish disaster comes just days after a similar incident in Italy that choked 9 people, including children, highlighting the danger of neglecting the routine maintenance of chemical pumping systems that can turn pools into toxic gas traps in an instant.
