The statements made by French Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé regarding satirical images circulating online have sparked reactions in China, after Chinese companies announced the termination of their commercial cooperation with him, following his comments about images comparing him to former Chinese leader Mao Zedong.
The decisions included companies such as "Dongbing" for beverages, and "Mengniu" and "Milkground" for dairy products, which announced the cessation of their business relations with the player, amid assurances of rejecting any actions they see as offensive to the national sentiments of the Chinese people.
"Dongbing" issued statements through its official accounts on social media platforms, including the Chinese platform "Weibo," confirming the end of its cooperation with Mbappé, indicating that it does not tolerate behaviors it considers offensive to national sentiments, without providing detailed reasons for the decision.
Following suit were the companies "Mengniu" and "Milkground," both announcing the termination of their cooperation with the French star, a step that came after his statements regarding the satirical images circulated widely.
The incident dates back to a recent interview in which Mbappé was asked about his favorite satirical image, during which he spoke about an image showing his face superimposed on that of a Chinese leader, explaining that he laughs at it and uses it often in jokes with his friends.
Although he did not explicitly mention the name of any Chinese leader in his remarks, the statement brought attention back to a satirical image that had circulated in recent months among football fans on social media, depicting the French player's features in the form of Mao Zedong.
