The Minister of Media, Salman Al-Dosari, along with several writers and journalists, mourned the literary figure and writer Imran bin Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Imran, a former member of the Shura Council and the first editor-in-chief of the newspaper "Al-Riyadh," recalling his contributions to journalism, literature, and national work, as well as his published works and professional experience that are linked to an early stage in the history of Saudi journalism.
The Minister of Media wrote on his account on the "X" platform: "May Allah have mercy on Professor Imran Al-Imran, one of the pioneers of journalism and literature in the Kingdom, and the first editor-in-chief of Al-Riyadh newspaper. He served his country in government work and left a media impact and a literary legacy that remains a testament to his journey of giving. My sincere condolences to his family and loved ones, and I ask Allah to envelop him in His vast mercy and grant him a place in His spacious gardens."
Former Shura Council member, writer Dr. Hamad Al-Qadi, recalled in his conversation with Okaz, Al-Imran's pioneering role in journalism, as he worked as a writer and deputy editor-in-chief of "Al-Yamamah" with its founder Sheikh Hamad Al-Jasser, before taking over as editor-in-chief of "Al-Riyadh" as its first editor. Al-Qadi pointed to his poetic contributions through his diwan "The Thirsty Hope," and his early literary studies about prominent poets and his book on the poet Ibn Al-Muqri Al-Ahsa'i, in addition to his social and national writings during the early stages of development, and the positions he held in service of the nation.
Writer and journalist Abdullah Al-Husaini told "Okaz" that Al-Imran's passing represents a loss for one of the pioneers of journalism and culture in the Kingdom, noting that he belonged to a generation for whom journalism was not merely a profession, but a cultural and national responsibility, and a field for participating in building public awareness.
Al-Husaini added: "When we recall Imran Al-Imran, we are not only recalling the first editor-in-chief of Al-Riyadh newspaper, but we are also recalling an important phase in the history of our national journalism, where the literary figure, journalist, and researcher converged in one personality. Al-Imran was a model of this generation that did not separate journalistic work from interest in literature, thought, and societal affairs."
He noted that Al-Imran's relationship with "Al-Riyadh" remained strong despite the short duration of his editorship, citing his words when the newspaper reached its sixtieth year: "I hope it is at the top today and every day," adding: "This phrase encapsulates the meaning of noble professional belonging; the man left his administrative position, but the institution remained present in his consciousness."
Al-Husaini explained that the late's cultural experience deserves further study, saying: "My library contains five of his works: Literary Margins, Affairs and Opinions, and Prominent Poets of Yemen, along with his diwans The Thirsty Hope and Inspired by the Years. These works reveal a multifaceted personality that combines poetic sensitivity, literary research, intellectual writing, and journalistic work, affirming that his pioneering role cannot be reduced to his journalistic position, no matter how historically significant it is."
He also pointed out that the late combined his cultural contributions with serving his country in various administrative positions.
Regarding Al-Imran's passing just before the time set to celebrate him, Al-Husaini said: "The irony was painful; we were preparing to recall his biography in a cultural lecture, and the news of his death came just days before it was to take place. It was as if fate wanted the occasion to transform from a celebration of his life to a tribute to his memory."
Al-Husaini concluded his statement by saying: "True loyalty to our pioneers does not stop at mourning them, but is embodied in reading their works, documenting their experiences, and introducing new generations to what they have offered. Imran Al-Imran has passed away, but the impact he left in journalism, literature, and thought remains a part of our national memory. May Allah have mercy on him abundantly and grant his family and loved ones patience and solace."
For his part, journalist at "Al-Riyadh" newspaper and "Al-Yamamah" magazine, Mohammed Al-Husseini, told "Okaz": "May Allah have mercy on Professor Imran bin Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Imran, the first editor-in-chief of Al-Riyadh newspaper, whose name remains present in the institution's memory to this day. Although I did not work with him or live during his time, I often heard stories about him from colleagues, about his wisdom in managing the newspaper and his ability to build a whole generation of journalists who carried the newspaper's message for many years."
He added: "He was always remembered as a calm man, sincere in his work, close to his team, and keen to ensure that the word was a responsibility before it was a profession. With his passing, we lose one of the names of the pioneering generation that laid the foundation for an important phase in the history of Saudi journalism."
Al-Imran, who passed away today (Saturday), was born in Riyadh in 1352 AH, graduated in the first batch from the College of Arabic Language in 1377 AH, and took over as editor-in-chief of "Al-Riyadh" newspaper in 1385 AH, becoming the first to hold this position at the newspaper.
