In a controversial investigative revelation, the financial investigations team of Bellingcat, in collaboration with the Sunday Times, unveiled the threads of a complex network linking former mixed martial arts (UFC) fighter, Monir Laziz, to international organized crime networks and massive shipping deals subject to U.S. sanctions due to support for the Iranian regime.
The chapters of the story date back to the emergence of Monir Laziz, known by the nickname "The Sniper" and the first Arab to break into the world of the UFC, alongside the leaders of a dangerous Irish drug gang, Kristy and Daniel Keenan, during a fighting championship in the Middle East. This relationship was not hidden, as Monir Laziz has long publicly proclaimed his friendship with Daniel Keenan, describing him as "brother and advisor," even going so far as to publicly thank him from inside the fighting ring in Las Vegas in 2022, ignoring the international sanctions imposed on the gang leader, for whom the United States has offered millions of dollars for information.
However, the investigations did not stop at mere sports pleasantries; official documents and company records revealed the involvement of the 38-year-old Tunisian athlete in business ventures far removed from sports. In 2023, the former fighter's name appeared as a director of two companies established to finance the purchase of two oil tankers worth over $80 million, which were later subjected to U.S. sanctions for their involvement in assisting and securing the interests of the Iranian regime, in addition to the overlap of addresses with companies linked to massive cocaine shipments belonging to the same international cartel.
As the noose tightened and these documents were revealed, Monir Laziz left his gym in the Middle East and quietly moved to Italy with his family, where he attempted to start a new chapter by offering personal training in the town of Ascoli Piceno. As attempts by the press and Bellingcat to reach out to him and the teams associated with him for comments on these serious files were made, new digital accounts linked to him quickly went private or were closed, leaving behind major questions about the end of a sports career that shone in the professional arena only to conclude in the corridors of financial and international investigations.
