يستعد الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب لإلقاء كلمة خلال حفل عشاء رابطة مراسلي البيت الأبيض، اليوم (الجمعة)، بعد ثلاثة أشهر من تأجيل الحدث إثر محاولة مسلحة لاقتحام القاعة بهدف اغتياله، في مناسبة تعود هذا العام وسط إجراءات أمنية غير مسبوقة وجدل متصاعد حول حرية الصحافة في الولايات المتحدة.

وبينما يقدم منظمو الحفل مشاركة ترمب باعتبارها رسالة تؤكد رفض العنف والدفاع عن حرية التعبير، ترى منظمات صحفية ومدافعون عن حرية الإعلام أن استضافته تتناقض مع ما تصفه بـ«سياسات إدارته المعادية للصحافة».

محاولة اغتيال قلبت الحدث

وكان العشاء السنوي قد أُلغي في موعده الأصلي بعدما حاول رجل يدعى كول توماس ألين، من ولاية كاليفورنيا، اقتحام قاعة الاحتفال التي ضمت مئات الصحفيين إلى جانب ترمب وعدد من أعضاء حكومته.

وتمكن عناصر جهاز الخدمة السرية من السيطرة على المهاجم بعد تبادل لإطلاق النار أدى إلى إصابة أحد الضباط، قبل أن يتم إجلاء الرئيس وكبار المسؤولين وإلغاء الحفل نهائياً.

ووجهت السلطات إلى المتهم لاحقاً اتهامات بمحاولة اغتيال رئيس الولايات المتحدة والاعتداء على موظف فيدرالي باستخدام سلاح قاتل.

إجراءات أمنية مشددة

وسيُقام العشاء المؤجل، الجمعة، داخل فندق والدورف أستوريا في واشنطن، بدلاً من فندق واشنطن هيلتون الذي استضاف المناسبة لعقود، في ظل ترتيبات أمنية مشددة، فيما أكد المنظمون أن الحفل سيكون أصغر حجماً وأكثر خصوصية مقارنة بالنسخة التي أُلغيت.

ويمثل الحدث أول مشاركة لترمب في عشاء رابطة مراسلي البيت الأبيض خلال فترتي رئاسته، إذ أُلغي العشاء السابق قبل أن يتمكن من إلقاء كلمته التي كانت محل ترقب واسع، خصوصاً مع تاريخه في مهاجمة وسائل الإعلام ووصفها مراراً بـ«الأخبار الزائفة».

رسالة «حرية التعبير»

وقالت رئيسة رابطة مراسلي البيت الأبيض ويجيا جيانغ إن إعادة تنظيم الحفل تمثل «رسالة واضحة بأن العنف لا مكان له في الحياة الأمريكية، وأن الصحافة الحرة لن تُرغم على الصمت بسبب التهديدات».

كما يعتبر البيت الأبيض مشاركة ترمب تأكيداً على الالتزام بالتعديل الأول للدستور الأمريكي، الذي يكفل حرية التعبير وحرية الصحافة.

في المقابل، انتقدت ثماني منظمات معنية بحرية الإعلام، من بينها لجنة حماية الصحفيين والرابطة الوطنية للصحفيين السود، قرار إقامة الحفل بحضور ترمب، معتبرة أنه يتناقض مع ما تقول إنه تصعيد من إدارته ضد المؤسسات الإعلامية.

ووقّع أكثر من 520 صحفياً رسالة مفتوحة طالبت رابطة مراسلي البيت الأبيض باستغلال المناسبة لإدانة ما وصفوه بمحاولات الإدارة تقويض حرية الصحافة، بدلاً من الاحتفاء بها.

وأشار الموقعون إلى مذكرات الاستدعاء الأخيرة التي طالت سجلات هواتف صحفيين في صحيفة نيويورك تايمز وأفراد من عائلاتهم، عقب نشر تقرير حول ثغرات أمنية في الطائرة الرئاسية الجديدة «إير فورس وان»، التي قُدمت هدية من قطر.

كما انتقدت المنظمات تهديدات ترمب السابقة بسحب تراخيص بث بعض القنوات التلفزيونية التي يعتبرها منحازة ضده.

وجاء في الرسالة: «نرى أنه من النفاق الاحتفال بالتعديل الأول للدستور أمام شخص يواصل مهاجمته بلا توقف، ونطالب رابطة مراسلي البيت الأبيض بإدانة سياسات الإدارة والدفاع عن أحد أهم ركائز الديمقراطية الأمريكية».

ترمب: ربما أغير خطابي

من جانبه، وصف ترمب إعادة تنظيم الحفل بأنها «دليل على القوة والصمود»، لكنه ألمح إلى احتمال تغيير مضمون الكلمة التي كان ينوي إلقاءها قبل إلغاء الحدث.

وكتب عبر منصته «تروث سوشيال»: «لا أعرف ما إذا كنت سأكرر التصريحات الحادة نفسها، على الأقل تجاه بعض الأشخاص، لكننا سنرى قريباً، وفي جميع الأحوال ستكون تذكرة الحضور ساخنة».

غيابات بارزة

ومن المنتظر أن يغيب عن العشاء كل من السيدة الأولى ميلانيا ترمب، ونائب الرئيس جيه دي فانس، ووزير الخارجية ماركو روبيو، رغم حضورهم النسخة التي أُلغيت سابقاً.

وأوضح متحدث باسم البيت الأبيض، نقلاً عن «Fox News Digital»، أن غيابهم يعود إلى «ارتباطات مسبقة»، فيما يُتوقع مشاركة عدد من أعضاء الحكومة الأمريكية في الحفل.

While the event organizers present Trump's participation as a message affirming the rejection of violence and the defense of freedom of expression, press organizations and media freedom advocates argue that his hosting contradicts what they describe as "his administration's anti-press policies."

Assassination Attempt Turned the Event Upside Down

The annual dinner was canceled on its original date after a man named Cole Thomas Allen, from California, attempted to storm the celebration hall, which included hundreds of journalists alongside Trump and several members of his administration.

Secret Service agents managed to subdue the attacker after an exchange of gunfire that resulted in one officer being injured, before evacuating the president and senior officials and ultimately canceling the event.

The authorities later charged the suspect with attempted assassination of the President of the United States and assaulting a federal employee with a deadly weapon.

Tight Security Measures

The postponed dinner will be held on Friday inside the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington, instead of the Washington Hilton hotel, which has hosted the event for decades, under strict security arrangements, while organizers confirmed that the event will be smaller and more private compared to the canceled version.

This event marks Trump's first participation in the White House Correspondents' Association dinner during his two terms in office, as the previous dinner was canceled before he could deliver his highly anticipated speech, especially given his history of attacking the media and repeatedly labeling it as "fake news."

The Message of "Freedom of Expression"

The President of the White House Correspondents' Association, Weijia Jiang, stated that reorganizing the event represents "a clear message that violence has no place in American life, and that a free press will not be silenced by threats."

The White House also views Trump's participation as a reaffirmation of commitment to the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

In contrast, eight media freedom organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists and the National Association of Black Journalists, criticized the decision to hold the event with Trump in attendance, arguing that it contradicts what they say is his administration's escalation against media institutions.

More than 520 journalists signed an open letter urging the White House Correspondents' Association to use the occasion to condemn what they described as the administration's attempts to undermine press freedom, rather than celebrating it.

The signatories pointed to recent subpoenas targeting the phone records of journalists at The New York Times and their family members, following the publication of a report about security breaches in the new presidential plane "Air Force One," which was gifted by Qatar.

The organizations also criticized Trump's previous threats to revoke the broadcasting licenses of certain television channels that he considers biased against him.

The letter stated: "We see it as hypocrisy to celebrate the First Amendment in front of someone who continues to attack it relentlessly, and we call on the White House Correspondents' Association to condemn the administration's policies and defend one of the most important pillars of American democracy."

Trump: I Might Change My Speech

For his part, Trump described the reorganization of the event as "a testament to strength and resilience," but hinted at the possibility of changing the content of the speech he intended to deliver before the event was canceled.

He wrote on his platform "Truth Social": "I don't know if I will repeat the same sharp statements, at least towards some people, but we will see soon, and in any case, the attendance will be hot."

Notable Absences

Expected to miss the dinner are First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, despite their attendance at the previously canceled version.

A White House spokesperson, quoted by "Fox News Digital," stated that their absence is due to "prior commitments," while several members of the U.S. government are expected to participate in the event.
