أعلن المدير الفني لمنتخب كوريا الجنوبية هونغ ميونغ-بو استقالته من منصبه عقب خروج المنتخب من دور المجموعات في كأس العالم، بعد فشله في التأهل إلى الأدوار الإقصائية، في خطوة جاءت تحت وطأة انتقادات جماهيرية ورسمية واسعة.

وكان المنتخب الكوري الجنوبي يأمل في بلوغ دور الـ32 ضمن أفضل المنتخبات صاحبة المركز الثالث، مستفيداً من النظام الجديد للبطولة بعد توسيعها من 32 إلى 48 منتخباً، إلا أن نتائج المباريات الأخرى، التي اكتملت السبت، أنهت آماله رسمياً في مواصلة المشوار.

وخلال مؤتمر صحفي عقده في المكسيك، اعتذر هونغ للجماهير عن الإخفاق، مؤكداً أن المسؤولية الكاملة تقع على عاتقه.

وقال: «لم نحقق النتائج التي كانت جماهيرنا تنتظرها، وأتحمل المسؤولية كاملة بصفتي المدير الفني».

وأضاف: «رغم رحيلي عن المنتخب، فإنني لن أتخلى عن كرة القدم الكورية، وسأواصل دعم المنتخب من كل قلبي، وآمل أن يستعيد ثقة الجماهير ومحبتها».

وأنهى المنتخب الكوري البطولة في المركز الثالث بالمجموعة الأولى، بعدما حقق فوزاً واحداً مقابل هزيمتين، خلف المكسيك وجنوب أفريقيا، رغم امتلاكه عدداً من الأسماء البارزة، يتقدمهم قائد الفريق سون هيونغ-مين.

وتصاعدت موجة الانتقادات عقب خسارة كوريا الجنوبية أمام جنوب أفريقيا بهدف دون رد في الجولة الأخيرة، وهي النتيجة التي وضعت مصير الفريق في انتظار نتائج بقية المجموعات قبل أن يتأكد خروجه رسمياً.

ولم تقتصر الانتقادات على الجماهير، إذ دعا الرئيس الكوري الجنوبي لي جاي ميونغ إلى فتح تحقيق في أسباب الأداء المخيب للمنتخب.

وقال الرئيس، في منشور عبر منصة «إكس»، إن الخروج المبكر يعكس «فشلاً في الإدارة واختيار الكوادر»، مضيفاً أن «تفضيل العلاقات الشخصية والمحسوبية على الكفاءة في اختيار المدرب يؤدي إلى نتائج يمكن التنبؤ بها».

كما أصدرت رابطة مشجعي المنتخب، المعروفة باسم «ريد ديفلز»، بياناً طالبت فيه هونغ بـ«الاعتذار للشعب الكوري والابتعاد عن كرة القدم نهائياً».

وكان تعيين هونغ ميونغ-بو مديراً فنياً للمنتخب عام 2024 قد أثار جدلاً واسعاً، بعدما اعتبر كثيرون أن الاتحاد الكوري لكرة القدم فضّل إعادة أحد رموزه التاريخيين على حساب مدربين أجانب خضعوا لعملية تقييم واختيار مطولة.

ورغم المكانة الكبيرة التي يحظى بها هونغ لاعباً، بعدما قاد منتخب كوريا الجنوبية إلى إنجاز تاريخي ببلوغ نصف نهائي كأس العالم 2002، فإن تجربته التدريبية الأولى مع المنتخب في مونديال 2014 انتهت أيضاً بالخروج من دور المجموعات دون تحقيق أي انتصار.

وقال هونغ إن قبول مهمة تدريب المنتخب مجدداً «لم يكن قراراً سهلاً»، مضيفاً: «قد لا تكون جميع قراراتي صحيحة، لكنها كانت دائماً تصب في مصلحة كرة القدم الكورية».

وفي تطور لافت، أفادت وسائل إعلام محلية بأن الشرطة الكورية الجنوبية شددت الإجراءات الأمنية في مطار إنتشون الدولي وعدد من المواقع الأخرى، بعد تداول تهديدات بالقتل استهدفت المدرب عبر الإنترنت قبيل عودته إلى البلاد.

ووفقا لتقرير «راديو سيول»، فإن أحد الأشخاص نشر رسالة أمس، عبر الإنترنت، زعم فيها أنه مواطن أمريكي، وأعلن نيته قتل مدرب المنتخب فور وصوله إلى مطار إنتشون، ما دفع السلطات إلى وضع الموقع الإلكتروني ومواقع أخرى تحت المراقبة المشددة.

The head coach of the South Korean national team, Hong Myung-bo, announced his resignation from his position following the team's exit from the group stage of the World Cup, after failing to qualify for the knockout rounds, in a move that came under the weight of widespread public and official criticism.

The South Korean team had hoped to reach the round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams, benefiting from the new tournament format after it was expanded from 32 to 48 teams, but the results of the other matches, which concluded on Saturday, officially ended its hopes of continuing the journey.

During a press conference held in Mexico, Hong apologized to the fans for the failure, affirming that the full responsibility lies with him.

He said: "We did not achieve the results that our fans were expecting, and I take full responsibility as the head coach."

He added: "Even though I am leaving the team, I will not abandon Korean football, and I will continue to support the team with all my heart, and I hope it regains the trust and love of the fans."

The South Korean team finished the tournament in third place in Group A, having achieved one win and two losses, behind Mexico and South Africa, despite having several prominent names, led by team captain Son Heung-min.

The wave of criticism intensified following South Korea's loss to South Africa by a goal to nil in the final round, a result that left the team's fate awaiting the results of the other groups before its exit was officially confirmed.

The criticism was not limited to the fans, as South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol called for an investigation into the reasons for the team's disappointing performance.

The president, in a post on the "X" platform, stated that the early exit reflects "a failure in management and selection of personnel," adding that "favoring personal relationships and nepotism over competence in selecting the coach leads to predictable results."

The national team supporters' association, known as the "Red Devils," also issued a statement demanding that Hong "apologize to the Korean people and step away from football entirely."

Hong Myung-bo's appointment as head coach of the national team in 2024 sparked widespread controversy, as many considered that the Korean Football Association preferred to bring back one of its historical figures at the expense of foreign coaches who underwent a lengthy evaluation and selection process.

Despite the significant status Hong enjoys as a player, having led the South Korean national team to a historic achievement by reaching the semifinals of the 2002 World Cup, his first coaching experience with the team in the 2014 World Cup also ended with an exit from the group stage without achieving any victories.

Hong stated that accepting the task of coaching the national team again "was not an easy decision," adding: "Not all of my decisions may be correct, but they have always been in the best interest of Korean football."

In a notable development, local media reported that South Korean police tightened security measures at Incheon International Airport and several other locations, following online death threats targeting the coach prior to his return to the country.

According to a report from "Radio Seoul," one individual posted a message online yesterday, claiming to be an American citizen, announcing his intention to kill the national team coach upon his arrival at Incheon Airport, prompting authorities to place the website and other sites under heightened surveillance.
