نشأ قصر المصمك بالرياض وقلعة الرفاع بالبحرين؛ في سياق تاريخي متقارب (القرن الـ19)، ولهما خصائص عمرانية معمارية خاصة بالبيئة الخليجية التقليدية، وهما يعكسان اختلاف الموارد الطبيعية في البيئتين السعودية والبحرينية.

وثمة أوجه تشابه تجمع هذين المعلمين التاريخيين، وظيفياً ومعمارياً وتاريخياً؛ كالتالي:

أولاً: الوظيفة التاريخية؛ فكلاهما حصنان دفاعيان وموقعان إستراتيجيان ومركزان للحكم؛ إذ استخدم قصر المصمك مقرا إداريا وعسكريا في الرياض، وقلعة الرفاع مقراً للحاكم ومركزاً للسلطة السياسية، وكلاهما يعكسان العمارة الخليجية التقليدية القائمة على استخدام مواد بناء محلية متلائمة مع المناخ الحار والجاف في المنطقة.

ثانياً: التخطيط الداخلي؛ فيعتمد كلاهما على نظام الأفنية الداخلية المحيطة بها الغرف، وهو نمط معماري شائع في المباني التقليدية في شبه الجزيرة العربية، إذ يساعد على تنظيم الفراغات الداخلية وتوفير التهوية الطبيعية.

ورغم تشابهما في عدة جوانب؛ فهناك فروق واضحة بينهما:

- فقصر المصمك في سياقه التاريخي ارتبط بشكل مباشر بحدث عسكري مفصلي، ومعركة استعادة الرياض عام 1902. ومن ناحية الموقع فيقع في قلب النسيج الحضري التاريخي لمدينة الرياض، ويتسم بضخامة الحجم والطابع العسكري الحصين، تجمع بين البساطة والمتانة الشديدة، وتغيب الزخارف المعقدة لصالح الوظيفة الدفاعية والحماية من المناخ الصحراوي. - أما قلعة الدفاع فارتبطت أكثر بوظيفتها كمقر للحكم والإقامة الملكية. ومن ناحية الموقع؛ فتقع على مرتفع طبيعي يطل على وادي، مما يمنحها طابعاً جغرافياً مختلفاً.

- من حيث مواد البناء؛ يعتمد قصر المصمك بدرجة أكبر على الطين واللبن وفق الطراز النجدي التقليدي؛ بينما تستخدم قلعة الرفاع تستخدم مزيجاً من الحجر الجص والطين، وتميل إلى صغر الحجم نسبياً مع تحولها من دور دفاعي بحت إلى بيت سكني أيضاً؛ تصميمه يعتمد على الأفنية المفتوحة التي توفر التهوية الطبيعية، وتوزيع الغرف حولها بشكل فعّال وظيفياً.

The Masmak Palace in Riyadh and the Riffa Fort in Bahrain were established in a closely related historical context (the 19th century), and they both possess architectural characteristics specific to the traditional Gulf environment, reflecting the differences in natural resources between the Saudi and Bahraini environments.

There are similarities that connect these two historical landmarks, functionally, architecturally, and historically, as follows:

First: the historical function; both are defensive fortresses, strategic locations, and centers of governance; the Masmak Palace served as an administrative and military headquarters in Riyadh, while the Riffa Fort was the residence of the ruler and a center of political power. Both reflect traditional Gulf architecture based on the use of local building materials suitable for the hot and dry climate of the region.

Second: the internal planning; both rely on a system of internal courtyards surrounding the rooms, which is a common architectural style in traditional buildings in the Arabian Peninsula, as it helps organize internal spaces and provide natural ventilation.

Despite their similarities in several aspects, there are clear differences between them:

- The Masmak Palace, in its historical context, is directly linked to a pivotal military event, the battle to reclaim Riyadh in 1902. In terms of location, it is situated in the heart of the historical urban fabric of Riyadh, characterized by its large size and fortified military nature, combining simplicity with extreme sturdiness, and lacking complex decorations in favor of defensive functionality and protection from the desert climate. - On the other hand, the Riffa Fort is more associated with its function as a residence for governance and royal living. In terms of location, it is situated on a natural elevation overlooking a valley, giving it a distinct geographical character.

- In terms of building materials; the Masmak Palace relies more heavily on mud and adobe according to the traditional Najdi style, while the Riffa Fort uses a mixture of plaster stone and clay, and tends to be relatively smaller in size as it transitioned from a purely defensive role to also being a residential house; its design relies on open courtyards that provide natural ventilation, with rooms effectively distributed around them.
