Amnesty International has warned of the worsening humanitarian crisis in Taiz due to the blockade by the Houthi militia, confirming that the lives of thousands of civilians are at risk amid escalating fighting close to densely populated areas. It demanded that the Houthis immediately open the main roads leading to and surrounding the city of Taiz.
Deteriorating Humanitarian Conditions
The organization reported today, Saturday, that the Houthis have tightened their grip on the city of Taiz during October, following the cutting of the main road linking it to the city of Aden, which has pushed the humanitarian situation towards further deterioration, hindered the delivery of aid, and threatened the access of hundreds of thousands of residents to food, water, and healthcare.
Amnesty quoted Heba Morayef, its Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, as saying that the residents of Taiz, Yemen's third-largest city, have suffered for years from the repercussions of the conflict, while the city hosts the largest number of internally displaced persons in the country. She added that the Houthis have imposed a blockade on the city at different times since 2015, closing the main roads that connect it to other cities and towns, forcing civilians to use rugged and dangerous mountain paths that lack maintenance.
Acute Shortage of Essential Goods
Morayef warned that the residents of Taiz are once again facing the blockade and an acute shortage of essential goods, including food, water, and medicine, stressing that international law obliges the Houthis to ensure that the delivery of aid and essential supplies to civilians in need is not obstructed, and to enable those wishing to leave the city to do so freely and safely.
The organization pointed to UN warnings of a severe shortage of fuel and oxygen in vital medical facilities, and the possibility of running out of wheat and flour supplies within less than three weeks, in addition to food prices rising by about 50%, and a significant scarcity of cooking gas.
Unimpeded Passage of Aid
Amnesty International emphasized that international humanitarian law requires all parties to the conflict to allow the passage of neutral humanitarian aid to civilians in need and to facilitate its swift and unimpeded access, as well as to allow civilians wishing to leave besieged areas to exit, and to ensure the freedom of movement for authorized humanitarian workers.
The organization called on all parties to the conflict to take the necessary precautions to spare civilians and civilian objects from the effects of military operations, warning that the renewed fighting comes at a time when Yemen is facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, amid economic collapse and a sharp decline in humanitarian funding.
Intensifying Pressure on the Houthis
In a related context, Morayef urged the international community and donor countries to intensify efforts to support civilians in Yemen, and to exert urgent and repeated pressure on the Houthis to open the roads to Taiz and release all those arbitrarily detained, including humanitarian workers, along with providing urgent and sufficient funding for the humanitarian response plan in Yemen, which suffers from chronic funding shortages, exacerbated by the reduction of global aid in 2025, according to the organization.
The organization stated that the UN-mediated ceasefire agreement between the parties to the conflict in Yemen in 2022 collapsed in July, following an escalation of fighting between the Houthis and government forces, particularly along the western coast and in Taiz Governorate, coinciding with a broader regional escalation linked to the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
