The sea in Jeddah is no longer just a blue horizon touching the edges of the city; it has become part of its daily rhythm, an open space where sports, entertainment, tourism, and culture intersect.
With the first rays of morning, the waterfront begins to welcome walking, running, and cycling enthusiasts, while its features change with the arrival of evening, transforming into a destination for families and visitors, where seating areas, restaurants, cafes, and recreational activities coexist in a scene that reflects a new aspect of quality of life in the city.
The Sea... The Pulse of the City
Since Jeddah established its location on the eastern coast of the Red Sea, the sea has been more than just a geographical element; it has been its gateway to the world, with its waters linked to trade, pilgrim caravans, and the communication between cultures and peoples that have come to the city from various directions. Today, this relationship is back in the spotlight, but in a modern urban form that transforms the coast from the city's boundaries into a vibrant space.
The maritime experience in Jeddah is distributed across five main waterfronts: the Roshan waterfront, the Obhur waterfront, the northern corniche, the middle corniche, and Al Saif Beach, where open spaces integrate with pedestrian pathways, cycling tracks, play areas, seating areas, sports facilities, restaurants, and cafes, providing residents and visitors with multiple options to spend their time by the sea.
Spaces that Create Life
Along the coast, the distances appear as threads drawing a new map of daily life; the Jeddah waterfront promenade extends for about 4.5 kilometers, while the Al Saif Beach promenade reaches about three kilometers, and the northern corniche stretches for about 3.85 kilometers. Between these pathways, pedestrians, runners, and cyclists find an open space to engage in activities and enjoy the marine scenery at the same time.
However, the story of quality of life in Jeddah does not end at the beach; in the neighborhoods, walkways and parks are widespread, with the number of parks exceeding 443, adding green spaces and open breathing areas to the urban fabric, along with facilities that serve the community. Prince Majid Park, spanning over 130,000 square meters, stands out as one of the destinations that combines nature, movement paths, and recreational facilities in one space.
In the new urban areas, parks and sports pathways are no longer elements added at the end of the planning process; they have become part of the picture from the very beginning. In April 2026, the Jeddah Municipality revealed 28 special plans under implementation, comprising 7,957 plots over a total area exceeding 15.7 million square meters; among them, about 743,927 square meters are allocated for green spaces, along with pathways for walking and cycling and sports fields.
When summer arrives, the scene expands to take on a more pronounced tourist character; in the summer of 2026, Jeddah enhanced its maritime readiness through 12 beaches and marine sites, prepared for swimming and beach activities, with 66 lifeguards on duty around the clock during peak times, transforming the waters of the Red Sea into a broader space for experience, exploration, and enjoyment.
The Coast Opens Its Doors
In the backdrop of this scene, the organization of coastal activities provides the maritime experience with a more integrated framework. In addition to organizing and enabling coastal tourism through regulatory frameworks aimed at enhancing the quality of the experience and ensuring safety for activity practitioners and visitors, it also provides a clearer environment for investors and service providers, supporting the diversity and sustainability of tourism experiences along the Red Sea coast.
However, the sea in Jeddah carries a memory older than all these modern waterfronts; in historic Jeddah, the impact of the old port is still present in the story of a city that has welcomed pilgrims, traders, and newcomers from around the world for centuries. Herein lies the projects to revive the historic area, reshaping the relationship between the city and its waters, and recalling part of the role the sea played in shaping Jeddah's identity.
As part of the development of the waterfront of Lake Al-Arbaeen, it includes reshaping the basin and creating a maritime promenade of 972 meters in length, along with 490 meters of supporting seawalls and infrastructure development. The initiative to renew the waterfront in historic Jeddah also includes a park extending over approximately 260,000 square meters, and a waterfront of 4.4 kilometers, with the planting of about 3,600 trees, and plans to create a marina for yachts, green spaces, pedestrian bridges, and public facilities.
The Memory of the Sea and History
Thus, the position of the sea in the Jeddah narrative changes; it is no longer just a view that settles behind the city, but has become a space where the details of life move, from a sports promenade that starts with the morning to a restaurant overlooking the sunset, from a beach welcoming visitors to a historic neighborhood that retains the memory of the port. In the distance between these scenes, an image of a city emerges that reclaims the sea as part of its present, just as it was part of its past.
What gives Jeddah its uniqueness is that the details of a single day there can encapsulate the story of an entire city; starting from the sea and its pathways, passing through activities, restaurants, and hospitality, and then leading to the alleys of historic Jeddah and its rich memory. A short journey in place, but vast in experience, combining nature with entertainment, tourism with culture, and modernity with the roots of the city.
With the continued development of waterfronts, parks, urban plans, and historical sites, Jeddah appears to be rearranging its relationship with the sea in a way that transcends the traditional image of a coastal city. The coast enters into the details of housing, work, sports, entertainment, and tourism, while the historical memory remains present in the background, completing the picture of a city where the blue of the sea meets the shadows of history, and where the waterfront transforms from a scene to be seen into a life to be lived.
