Educators confirmed to "Okaz" that the "Professional Master's Program in Teaching" enhances teacher preparation before entering the field and links academic qualification with classroom practice, emphasizing that a certificate alone is not sufficient to assess teaching ability, and that the value of qualification is reflected in skills and the ability to manage learning and guide students.
Dr. Zaid Al-Khamshi, a specialist in training and professional development, explained that the importance of the program lies in starting preparation before the teacher enters the field, linking academic qualification with professional practice and the needs of the school.
He stated that teacher development initiatives have faced a fundamental question over the years about how to bridge the gap between preparation and actual practice in the classroom, indicating that the program addresses this gap by combining academic qualification with professional application.
He added that teaching is a profession that requires, in addition to specialized knowledge, skills in managing learning, understanding the learner, and making professional decisions, stressing that teacher preparation is not measured solely by the amount of knowledge but by the ability to translate that knowledge into actual learning in the classroom.
Al-Khamshi viewed the most important transformation as moving from developing teachers after they join the profession to preparing them before entering it, making professional development based on building readiness for practice, rather than addressing needs after they arise.
For his part, educator Saeed Al-Ahmari confirmed that professional qualification enhances the status of teaching as a specialized profession, but he stressed that the certificate measures what the candidate has learned and is not enough on its own to judge teaching ability.
He explained that the program should focus on building the teacher's skills in accordance with the educational stage; teaching a seven-year-old child requires patience and the ability to simplify, while teaching a high school student requires depth of knowledge and skill in dialogue.
Al-Ahmari called for interviews based on classroom situations and teaching simulations to assess language proficiency, balance, classroom management ability, and the candidate's suitability for the stage they will teach.
He added that evaluation does not end with acceptance but requires periodic performance reviews, pointing out that one of the most prominent indicators in the elementary stage is the student's ability to read fluently, write correctly, and master basic arithmetic, as deficits in these skills accumulate and are difficult to compensate for.
For his part, educator Mohammed Al-Mudayani believed that the professional master's degree represents a pathway for developing teacher preparation, in light of the changing role within the classroom and the evolution of means to access knowledge.
He explained that the teacher's role goes beyond transferring information and rote learning to guiding the learning process, employing modern strategies and technologies, and helping students to research, think critically, and apply what they learn in their lives.
He noted that teachers today are dealing with a generation that has easy access to information through technology and artificial intelligence, which increases the need to equip them with skills to handle, evaluate, critique, and utilize that information.
Al-Mudayani emphasized that the value of professional qualification is linked to what it adds to the teacher's practice and their ability to guide students, contributing to improving the quality of education.
Regarding the nature of the program, the National Institute for Educational Professional Development clarified that the professional master's degree in teaching does not require a scientific thesis, and that its certificate is professional and does not qualify for pursuing a doctoral degree, indicating that it targets qualifying bachelor's degree holders to join the teaching profession through an academic and professional preparation that combines knowledge and practice.
The institute stated that the program is implemented in six universities: King Saud University, King Abdulaziz University, Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University, King Khalid University, Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University, and Tabuk University, according to the framework and methodology approved by the institute, and by academic staff prepared to deliver it.
It pointed out that the program focuses on professionally and practically preparing candidates before entering the teaching profession, which raises the quality of teacher preparation, helps schools receive teachers who are more ready for practice, and supports the development of human capital and improves the Kingdom's performance in international educational indicators.
