في تاريخ الدول هناك أشخاص ارتبطت أسماؤهم بملفات معينة حتى أصبح من الصعب الحديث عن تلك الملفات دون استحضار أدوارهم، وفي تاريخ الطيران السعودي يصعب تجاوز اسم الأمير سلطان بن عبدالعزيز -رحمه الله- بوصفه أبرز من أسهموا في بناء هذا القطاع وصياغة ملامحه الحديثة، حتى غدا حضوره جزءاً رئيسياً من ذاكرة الطيران في المملكة رغم المناصب الكبرى التي تقلدها.
لطالما راودتني فكرة تأليف كتاب يوثق تلك المراحل، ليس لأن الأمير سلطان كان مسؤولاً عن قطاع الطيران لسنوات طويلة فقط، إنما لأن التحوّلات التي شهدها الطيران السعودي في عهده تستحق أن تُقرأ بوصفها تجربة وطنية متكاملة، وأن توثق للأجيال القادمة باعتبارها جزءاً مهماً من تاريخ المملكة الحديث.
حين نتأمل واقع الطيران السعودي بما يضمّه من مطارات وشركات ناقلة، ومنظومة تشريعية متقدّمة وحضور دولي مؤثر، فإننا أمام نتائج تراكمية جاءت بعد عقود من التخطيط والعمل والبناء، ومن الإنصاف توثيق اللبنات الأولى ومن حمل مسؤولية هذا القطاع سنوات طويلة.
آمن الأمير سلطان بأن الطيران قوة سيادية ورافعة اقتصادية وجسر يربط المملكة بالعالم، لذلك امتد اهتمامه من شراء الطائرات وإنشاء المطارات إلى بناء منظومة متكاملة من التشريعات والأنظمة وتنمية الكفاءات وتطوير البنى التحتية، وتعزيز الحضور السعودي في المنظمات الدولية.
شهد الطيران المدني السعودي تحت قيادته توسعاً كبيراً في شبكة النقل الجوي، وتحسّناً مستمراً في الخدمات وتطوراً في الأنظمة والإجراءات، بما يتناسب مع النمو الذي كانت تعيشه المملكة آنذاك، وفي نفس الوقت كان الطيران العسكري يسير بخطوات متسارعة نحو التحديث والتطوير، حتى أصبحت المملكة تمتلك واحدة من أكثر المنظومات الجوية تقدّماً في المنطقة.
إن النجاحات الكبرى تُصنع بالرؤى بعيدة المدى، والاستمرار في البناء، وتأسيس مؤسسات قادرة على البقاء مع مرور الزمن، لهذا أرى أن الحديث عن الأمير سلطان في سياق الطيران لا يكون حديثاً عاطفياً أو احتفالياً بقدر ما هو قراءة موضوعية لتجربة إدارية وتنموية أثرت في قطاع إستراتيجي أصبح اليوم أحد أهم القطاعات التي تراهن عليها المملكة ضمن مستهدفات رؤية السعودية 2030.
يرحل الأشخاص، لكن يبقى العمل والأثر الذي تركوه في حياة الناس، وهذه هي القيمة الحقيقية في الأوطان.
اليوم، ونحن نشهد التحوّلات الكبرى التي يعيشها قطاع الطيران في المملكة من توسع غير مسبوق في المطارات، وإطلاق ناقلات جديدة واستثمارات ضخمة، ومستهدفات تجعل المملكة مركزاً عالمياً للطيران، فإن من الجميل أن نستحضر التاريخ الذي بدأت منه هذه المسيرة ونحن ننطلق إلى آفاق مدهشة ترسمها رؤية 2030 التي أطلقها سمو ولي العهد الأمير محمد بن سلمان، هذه الرؤية المباركة التي تأخذ الوطن بكافة قطاعاته إلى مدار آخر من النجاح والازدهار.
ما زالت فكرة الكتاب ترافقني، لا بوصفه كتاباً عن شخصية إنما بوصفه كتاباً عن مرحلة صنعت جزءاً مهماً من تاريخ الطيران السعودي، وعن رجل ارتبط اسمه بهذا القطاع لعقود طويلة حتى أصبح حضوره جزءاً من هويته، والأمير سلطان يستحق عملاً يوثّق علاقته بالطيران، ويستعرض المشاريع والإنجازات والتحديات التي صاحبت تلك المرحلة، ففي هذا تكريم لشخصية رائدة وحفاظ على ذاكرة قطاع أسهم في ربط المملكة بالعالم.
قطاع كان ولا يزال أحد أعمدة التنمية الوطنية السعودية.
In the history of nations, there are individuals whose names have become associated with specific files, making it difficult to discuss those files without recalling their roles. In the history of Saudi aviation, it is hard to overlook the name of Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz - may God have mercy on him - as he was one of the most prominent contributors to the development of this sector and the shaping of its modern features. His presence has become a major part of the memory of aviation in the Kingdom, despite the high-ranking positions he held.
I have long been contemplating the idea of writing a book that documents those stages, not only because Prince Sultan was responsible for the aviation sector for many years, but also because the transformations that Saudi aviation underwent during his tenure deserve to be read as a comprehensive national experience, and to be documented for future generations as an important part of the modern history of the Kingdom.
When we reflect on the reality of Saudi aviation, which includes airports, airlines, an advanced legislative system, and a significant international presence, we see the cumulative results that came after decades of planning, work, and construction. It is only fair to document the foundational blocks and those who bore the responsibility for this sector for many years.
Prince Sultan believed that aviation is a sovereign force, an economic lever, and a bridge connecting the Kingdom to the world. Therefore, his interest extended from purchasing aircraft and establishing airports to building a comprehensive system of laws and regulations, developing competencies, enhancing infrastructure, and strengthening Saudi presence in international organizations.
Under his leadership, Saudi civil aviation witnessed significant expansion in the air transport network, continuous improvement in services, and development in systems and procedures, in line with the growth that the Kingdom was experiencing at that time. Simultaneously, military aviation was advancing rapidly towards modernization and development, making the Kingdom possess one of the most advanced air systems in the region.
Great successes are made through long-term visions, continuous building, and establishing institutions capable of enduring over time. Therefore, I see that discussing Prince Sultan in the context of aviation is not merely an emotional or celebratory discourse, but rather an objective reading of a managerial and developmental experience that has impacted a strategic sector, which today is one of the most important sectors that the Kingdom is betting on within the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
People may leave, but the work and the impact they have left on people's lives remain, and this is the true value in nations.
Today, as we witness the major transformations taking place in the aviation sector in the Kingdom, from unprecedented expansion in airports, the launch of new carriers, and massive investments, to goals that position the Kingdom as a global aviation hub, it is beautiful to recall the history from which this journey began as we embark on amazing horizons shaped by Vision 2030, launched by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. This blessed vision is taking the nation across all its sectors to another orbit of success and prosperity.
The idea of the book still accompanies me, not as a book about a personality, but as a book about a phase that created an important part of the history of Saudi aviation, and about a man whose name has been associated with this sector for decades, making his presence part of its identity. Prince Sultan deserves a work that documents his relationship with aviation, showcasing the projects, achievements, and challenges that accompanied that phase, as this honors a pioneering figure and preserves the memory of a sector that contributed to connecting the Kingdom with the world.
A sector that has been and remains one of the pillars of Saudi national development.
