British MP Richard Burgon revealed that more than 80 members of the British Parliament, from both the House of Commons and the House of Lords and belonging to 9 political parties, have signed a petition calling on the government to impose wide-ranging sanctions on Israel, in light of its policies in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly the settlement activities in the West Bank.
The demands outlined in the petition include imposing a ban on arms supplies to Israel, imposing economic sanctions on it, as well as halting trade in products coming from Israeli settlements established in the West Bank.
This parliamentary move comes at a time when international debate is escalating regarding the continuation of Israeli settlement expansion, amid Palestinian and international criticisms that consider the settlements an obstacle to the establishment of a Palestinian state and achieving a two-state solution.
International estimates indicate that hundreds of thousands of Israeli settlers reside in settlements in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, at a time when the United Nations and most of the international community consider Israeli settlements in the occupied territories to be in violation of international law, a stance that Israel rejects.
The petition comes days after discussions within the British Parliament regarding a bill named "Sanctions for Peace," introduced by MPs from the Labour Party, which calls for imposing sanctions on settlers involved in acts of violence, as well as halting trade with Israeli settlements.
Former British Foreign Secretary David Lammy described Israeli settlements as "illegal and undermining peace," warning that the continued expansion of settlements could undermine the chances of establishing a Palestinian state and threaten the future of the two-state solution.
Critics of settlement activity rely on United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334, issued in 2016, which affirmed that Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories since 1967, including East Jerusalem, "lack legal legitimacy" and called on Israel to cease all settlement activities, a resolution that the Israeli government rejected and criticized its content.
International criticism of Israeli settlement policy intensified after the Israeli government announced, in December 2025, plans to establish 19 new settlements in the West Bank, according to information circulating about the development, which provoked critical international reactions.
