أكد قائد المنتخب السعودي الأول لكرة القدم سابقًا سامي الجابر أن المملكة العربية السعودية أصبحت من أكثر المنتخبات حضورًا في نهائيات كأس العالم خلال العقود الأخيرة، بعدما شاركت في 7 من آخر 9 نسخ من البطولة، في مسيرة بدأ أبرز فصولها من الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية عام 1994، حين سجّل الأخضر حضوره الأول وبلغ دور الـ16.

واستعاد الجابر في حديثه إلى بودكاست الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم (فيفا) ذكريات ذلك الجيل، مبينًا أن حلمه بالمونديال بدأ منذ متابعته كأس العالم 1986 في المكسيك، حين كان يتابع نجوم البرازيل وفرنسا وميشيل بلاتيني، ثم يخرج إلى الملعب متخيلًا نفسه لاعبًا للمنتخب السعودي في مكسيكو سيتي.

وأوضح الجابر أن ذلك الحلم كبر معه حتى تحقق في مونديال 1994، بعد أن كان أحد العناصر المؤثرة في مشوار التأهل، ومن بينها تسجيله هدفًا في الفوز على إيران بنتيجة 4-3 في التصفيات، الذي منح الأخضر بطاقة العبور إلى أول نهائيات كأس عالم في تاريخه.

وتحدث الجابر عن قوة مجموعة الأخضر في مونديال 1994، التي ضمت هولندا بجيلها الذهبي وأسماء مثل رود خوليت ومارك أوفرمارس، وبلجيكا بقيادة إنزو شيفو، إضافةً إلى المغرب الذي كان يضم عددًا كبيرًا من لاعبيه المحترفين في الدوري الفرنسي.

وأشار إلى أن المنتخب السعودي تجاوز التوقعات في مشاركته الأولى، ونجح في الفوز على المغرب بهدف سجله الجابر، قبل أن يحقق انتصارًا تاريخيًا على بلجيكا بهدف سعيد العويران، ليبلغ دور الـ16 في إنجاز لا يزال حاضرًا في ذاكرة الرياضة السعودية.

ويُعد الجابر أحد أبرز رموز كرة القدم السعودية، بعدما شارك في 4 نسخ متتالية من كأس العالم، وأسهم مع جيله في ترسيخ حضور الأخضر على الساحة العالمية وفتح الطريق أمام الأجيال اللاحقة لمواصلة المشاركة في أكبر محفل كروي عالمي.

Former captain of the Saudi national football team, Sami Al-Jaber, confirmed that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has become one of the most frequently participating teams in the World Cup finals in recent decades, having participated in 7 of the last 9 editions of the tournament, with a journey that began its most notable chapters in the United States in 1994, when the Green Team made its first appearance and reached the Round of 16.

In his conversation with the FIFA podcast, Al-Jaber reminisced about that generation, indicating that his dream of the World Cup began when he watched the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, where he followed the stars of Brazil and France, including Michel Platini, and then went out to the field imagining himself as a player for the Saudi national team in Mexico City.

Al-Jaber explained that this dream grew with him until it was realized in the 1994 World Cup, after he was one of the influential players in the qualification journey, including scoring a goal in the victory over Iran with a score of 4-3 in the qualifiers, which granted the Green Team a ticket to its first World Cup finals in history.

He talked about the strength of the Green Team's group in the 1994 World Cup, which included the Netherlands with its golden generation and names like Ruud Gullit and Marc Overmars, and Belgium led by Enzo Scifo, in addition to Morocco, which had a large number of its players in the French league.

He pointed out that the Saudi national team exceeded expectations in its first participation, successfully winning against Morocco with a goal scored by Al-Jaber, before achieving a historic victory over Belgium with a goal from Saeed Al-Owairan, reaching the Round of 16 in an achievement that is still present in the memory of Saudi sports.

Al-Jaber is considered one of the most prominent symbols of Saudi football, having participated in 4 consecutive World Cup editions, and contributed with his generation to establishing the presence of the Green Team on the global stage, paving the way for subsequent generations to continue participating in the largest global football event.
