In a move that surprised most forecasts, the Reserve Bank of Australia  decided on Tuesday to keep its key interest rate unchanged at 3.85%, defying widespread market and analyst expectations of another rate cut. The decision had an immediate impact on the currency markets, with the Australian dollar rising by 0.75% in recent trading to reach 0.6541 USD, after initially jumping more than 1% following the announcement.

Although the decision to hold rates was not among the primary scenarios anticipated by many observers, it was supported by six out of nine members of the monetary policy board, indicating internal divergence. However, the broader policy direction leans toward a wait-and-see approach, relying on upcoming economic data before considering further monetary easing.

This cautious stance comes amid growing global economic uncertainty, particularly due to U.S. tariff plans that continue to cast a shadow over global growth and financial stability.

The rate hold contradicts prevailing expectations in economic circles, which leaned toward a 25-basis-point cut, citing signs of slowing productivity and mounting pressure in the labor market. Nevertheless, the RBA opted to maintain policy stability, emphasizing that the timing of any adjustment is more critical than moving too quickly.
